I love being spontaneous and camping suits my personality in that we can just chuck everything in the car on a Friday at the end of a long week and go wherever takes our fancy for the weekend.
Dogwood campsite in Brede, Sussex is situated in one of my favourite areas of the county. The site is equi distance (15-20 minutes) into Rye, Hastings and Bodium and historic Battle is just down the road. Camber Sands with its long stretch of sand dunes and rolling surf is also easily accessible.
We arrived late on Friday evening and the owner of the site greeted us on our arrival, he showed us around the site and we were allowed to choose our spot. Pitches are unmarked, this site is small (and wonderfully quiet) we chose a nice sunny spot near trees at the edge of the field.
The site is basic but has all that you need, a hot shower, (I didn’t have to queue at all to use any facilities and the site was full) clean toilets and a room that houses a kettle, microwave and freezer for storage of ice packs. The owners keep chickens that roam freely around the site and sell fresh eggs, croissants and a handy selection of camping bits and bobs just in case you have forgotten something.
The field we stayed in was spacious and full of families, the children roamed happily around the site including into neighbouring woodland, collecting sticks for den building and playing hide and seek.
The site had a relaxed feel and I really appreciated the peace and quiet. I loved being woken by bird song in the morning. It was a great base for us (we had trips into Hastings and Herstmoncieux) although I could have quite happily stayed on the site all day and just chilled. The owner did recommend some walks nearby to neighbouring pubs that sounded very civilised, including one with an outside play area for children. The website for Dogwood campsite is available here and is packed with useful information regarding amenities in the local area, too many for us to tick off our list this time but have certainly whetted my appetite enough to return again, hopefully in the near future…
